How to Get More Coins in Pokémon GO

Pokecoins are quite a rare commodity in Pokemon GO and can be extremely difficult to get your hands on. They are used to buy a number of things within the game and are also representative of the in-game currency that you can buy using your real money.

There are plenty of scam websites out there that promise to give you free Pokecoins, but fail to do so every time, so it’s not even worth bothering to try.

In the current state of the game, there are two main ways for players to receive more Pokecoins, and we’re going to show them to you.

Pokemon GO – What is it?

Pokemon GO is a free smartphone app that uses augmented reality technology to combine gaming with the real world. It uses mapping and location tracking technology to create the ‘augmented reality’, in which players can train and catch various beloved Pokemon from the children’s show, Pokemon.

The word Pokemon is the name of a franchise that is owned by Nintendo. It had its inception in the 90s as a game for the then-popular Game Boy, with the game focussing on the fictional creatures known as Pokemon, which humans captured and trained to battle one another.

This Japanese game was wildly popular for its cute characters and unique graphics. The popular Game Boy game flourished and eventually became a successful franchise, with its own TV show, trading cards, toys, and comics.

Pokemon made a comeback in 2016 with the release of Pokemon GO, which aimed to bring the childhood magic of the franchise into the real world.

How Pokemon GO Works

Once you’ve downloaded the Pokemon GO mobile app, you’ll be prompted to create an account. Once that’s done, it’ll be time to start exploring your neighborhood in search of your favorite magical creatures in the real world.

As you walk around the world, Pokemon will show up on the game map, and when you get close enough, the Pokemon will pop up on your device’s screen, and you’ll be able to throw a Pokeball in an attempt to catch them. The goal is to find as many different Pokemon as you can.

The map is essentially an anime-styled rendition of Google maps, that changes real street names and landmarks out for buildings that are specific to Pokemon, like Gyms. There are also a number of PokeStops around, which are locations in the real world that allow players to collect some free PokeBalls, which are used to catch Pokemon.

Players are also able to find Pokemon eggs, which they can incubate and hatch into Pokemon, allowing them to be added to the player’s collection.

Getting More Pokecoins

As we mentioned earlier, there are two main ways in which players can acquire Pokecoins.

Method One – Buying Them

This method is quite obvious and involves spending some of your real-life money on the game to receive a certain amount of Pokecoins. Coins can be bought from the Shop tab in the game, at the following prices.

  • $0.99 – 100 coins
  • $4.99 – 550 coins
  • $9.99 – 1 200 coins
  • $19.99 – 2 500 coins
  • $39.99 – 5 200 coins
  • $99.99 – 14 500 coins

The pricing structure above is fairly standard for games that follow the freemium business model. It’s not the most efficient way to acquire coins, and it will obviously cost you some cash, but if you’re dedicated to the game, then you may find that they are worth the money.

Method Two -Taking on Gyms

This is one of the only ways to earn coins in-game without spending your money. It involves taking down and fortifying Gyms, and works as such:

Start by finding a Gym and taking it from another player, or fortifying it to allow you to store your Pokemon there. Be sure to click here for a guide on how to take and fortify gyms.

Once that’s done, you’ll be able to open the shop and ‘cash in’ every 21 hours. You will receive a commensurate number of Pokecoins depending on how many Pokemon you currently have in a Gym.

The button to get these coins appears in the top right corner of the Shop. Note that there’s no confirmation screen – once you’ve pressed the buttons, you’re going to have to wait another 21 hours, so make sure that you only tap it when you’re ready to cash out for the day.

You will receive 500 Stardust and 10 coins for each Pokemon that you have inside a Gym. So, if you have five Gyms with five Pokemon in them, you will receive 50 coins and 2500 Stardust.

There is no limit to how many Gyms you can have, nor is there a limit to how many Pokemon you can have in a Gym. But, the ‘cash in’ is capped at 10, so you won’t be able to earn more than 100 coins and 5000 stardust every day.
